Deliver Unparalleled Value

  • The first of a six-part webinar series entitled “A Great Time for Business” offered by JP Horizons was held on April 23rd. The subject was “The Power of Commitment” and of the 261 participants, 70 were PLANET members. Number two in the series is planned for June 18th and is titled “Energizing Employees.” For more information and to register, visit the JP Horizons website.
  • Held PR webinar on April 2nd that attracted more than 100 participants.
  • In addition to an exciting all-day tour of Dennis’ Seven Dees and Pacific Landscape Management facilities, Bill Arman and Ed Laflamme will hold leadership development and team building sessions each day during the Summer Leadership Meeting scheduled June 24–27, 2009, at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington. The meeting schedule as well as travel information is online.
  • The GIC schedule is complete and registration is available online. The goal is to have all the session and tour information online by mid-June.
  • On April 29, we sent an introductory e-mail to membership about our new online newsletter, Green Industry Weekly NewsBrief. Launch date was May 6.
  • Day of Service was focus of April’s PLANET Blog. Visit VoiceoftheGreenIndustry.org for more information.
  • Safety Awards — e-blast to nonmembers, former members (last five years), and STARS members.
  • April Safety $ense — e-blast to STARS members and PLANET members.
  • Spring Publications Sale and new publications catalog news article included in April FPN
  • Electronic 2009/2010 Publications Catalog available for free download on Bookstore Web page.
  • Members received the April PLANET News, Front Page News, and PLANET PR.
Grow the Green Industry Workforce

  • A total of 1,158 attendees registered for Student Career Days (SCD):
    • Schools: 61 colleges/universities and 3 high schools
    • Students: 784 college/university students and 12 high school FFA students
    • Faculty: 137 college/university faculty and 6 high school FFA advisors
    • Industry: 219
  • PLANET Campus e-newsletter launched to 488 students, faculty, and student chapter members as well as the Industry Recruitment and Student Career Days Committees. It highlighted SCD and is posted on the PLANET Campus section of the PLANET Web site as well as on the SCD Web site.
  • Surveys sent to all SCD attendees.
  • SUNY Cobleskill accreditation site visit took place April 27–29, 2009. Greg Jolley of BYU-Provo was the site visit leader.
  • SCD Site Visit/Strategic Planning Meeting is scheduled May 20–21, 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia. Because North Metro Technical College was site of 2008 SCD, we will be spending very little time on 2010 logistics. Our primary focus will be strategic planning for SCD’s future and to finalize the procedure manual.
  • SCD Committee Members and this year’s school participants have been e-mailed to ask for their input regarding the overall execution of the event so we can bring their comments/suggestions to the meeting.
Partner of Choice

  • Partnered with CNA, Lehr Middlebrooks, and JP Horizons to deliver webinars to our membership.
  • Mailed OSHA/PLANET-developed Quick Cards for distribution during North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, celebrated May 3–9, 2009. April Front Page News contains information about NAOSH Week.
  • In discussions with Landscape Management and Landscape & Irrigation on strengthening the partnership between PLANET and their respective trade publication.
  • Sent OSHA and NIOSH letters inviting them to participate at the Green Industry Conference and Student Career Days 2010.
  • One third-party-sponsored educational/training event reviewed and approved for Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
  • Conference call with University of Georgia on lawn care reference guide.
Marketplace Recognition

  • PLANET Day of Service
    • Approximately 1500–2000 volunteers and 285 projects.
    • An overwhelming amount of press clippings, photos, and releases sharing about a number of successful events have been coming into the PR department.
    • Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado signed up as state partner.
  • Safety Awards e-blast with subject line, “Is your company making this world a safer place?” sent out April 1.
  • Six new CLTEs awarded.
  • Trade press received monthly PLANET press releases.
Proactive Advocacy

  • Asked for comments on and submitted U.S. House on Agriculture Questionnaire on Climate Change with information from JOHN DEERE.
  • Tom Delaney, director of Government Affairs, attended and made a presentation the American Association of Pest Control Officials (AAPCO) meeting.
  • Prepared and gave webinar presentation on sustainability and industry issues for CNA partner for PLANET members.
  • Sent out various information documents to Government Affairs committee and others.
  • Sent notice to Florida members about Florida Green Industries Issues Summit, April 22, 2009, which Tom Delaney attended.
  • Second Legislative Day on the Hill Save-the-Date e-mail sent out April 9, 2009.
  • Sent press releases to the hometowns of the first- and second-place Superstar winners from Student Career Days.
  • Worked with editor of Yard & Garden and PRO on magazine article.
  • Worked with writer on Lowe’s For Pros e-newsletter article.
  • Scheduled Golf for PAC event at GIC and fundraiser dinner for Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper for Legislative Day on the Hill.
  • Continued with R&R and Legislative Day planning activities. Secured Davey Tree speaker for industry presentation during R&R at Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Added Web stickers to legislative action center and worked with supplier for state association participation.
  • Sent notice to PLANET Illinois members to fight SB 43 that would require prevailing wage be paid on ALL projects (publically or privately funded) located in an Enterprise Zone or Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.
