Hispanic sessions part of GIC education offerings

H-2B cap reached

On September 27, just one workday before the federal fiscal year began on October 1, 2007, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the nationwide cap for 33,000 H-2B workers for the first half of the fiscal year had been reached. Plans underway to revamp certification

A dedicated group of individuals met earlier this year to put a new certification strategic plan in place and set guidelines for all certifications within PLANET. The meeting participants were:

The new strategic plan calls for aligning PLANET’s certification program with the National Organization for Competency Assurance program standards. It also creates a common core of exams for technician-level certifications. See more details in the October issue of PLANET News.

New PLANET publications to debut at GIC

Green Industry Conference (GIC) attendees will have the opportunity to order five new PLANET publications by visiting “PLANET Central,” located in Lobby A at the Kentucky Expo Center. The publications cover how to prune ornamental trees and shrubs, ways to prevent pain and injury in the green industry, and details on operating and growing your lawn care business. Reports on the most current employee compensation statistics and what the future holds for green industry companies can also be ordered. The new publications will be available through the PLANET Bookstore soon.

Projects earn Environmental Improvement Awards

Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Environmental Improvement Awards program. Of the 164 projects entered in the program, 112 were recognized with an award. Applications available for Educator of the Year Award

The PLANET Academic Excellence Foundation (PLANET AEF) is currently accepting nominations for its Outstanding Educator of the Year Award for 2008. Applications must be submitted to the PLANET office no later than February 4, 2008. This award will be presented at the PLANET Student Career Days event, March 27–30, 2008, at North Metro Technical College in Atlanta, Georgia.

In August, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its decision not to initiate a special review of 2,4 dichloro-phenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), one of the most widely used herbicides in the U.S. and around the world .

Promote a drug-free workplace 

Drug-Free Work Week will be held October 14–20, 2007. Employers and employees across the country are encouraged to take part. The effort is being coordinated by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and members of its Drug-Free Workplace Alliance. Working drug free is key to workplace safety.
