PLANET ANNOUNCES NEWLY CERTIFIED CANDIDATES

HERNDON, Va., April 7, 2009
— An important part of the mission of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) is to promote the professional advancement of its members. One means to achieve that goal is through a certification program that tests individuals against a national standard created by PLANET.

Certified Landscape Professional (CLP)
To achieve the CLP designation, a candidate must master a body of material on all aspects of operating a green industry business. The four-hour exam is divided into seven sections: Risk, Law, and Contracts; Human Resources; Produc¬tion/Operation and Horticulture; Marketing; Leadership; Strategic Planning; and Corporate Financial Management. Certified Landscape Technician-Exterior (CLT-E)
The CLT-Exterior exam is a day-long event that tests the candidate’s ability to properly use equipment, demonstrate an understanding of handling plants and related materials, and pass written general comprehension tests — all done under the pressure of strict time frames. The candidate selects a specialty area (Maintenance, Installation, or Irrigation) and is judged on the skills and knowledge needed to perform tasks in that specialty. This course emphasizes plant physiology, woody ornamental identification, soils, plant establishment and fertilizers, plant health-care management, property maps, insect and disease identification, physiological or cultural problems, chemical injury, and pesticide safety.
