The certification test for exterior technicians is a full-day event. The test is made up of hands-on, skills demonstrations performed at the test site which approximates "real life" scenarios and written problems. The candidate selects a specialty area (Softscape Installation, Hardscape Installation, Turf Maintenance, Ornamental Maintenance or Irrigation) to achieve the designation in and is judged on work methods, adherence to best practices and safety ideals.

Every problem listed in the chosen specialty area must be passed to earn the Certified Landscape Technician designation. Each problem has a time limit set for its completion. Candidates may test at any state's test.  Official PLANET evaluators attend each test to assure the program is administered consistently across North America.
