Recertification Requirements Sheet / CEU Submission Form / Frequently Asked Questions

The information on this page is an expanded version of the printable Recertification Requirements Sheet. 24 CEUs are required every two years to maintain your certification. CEUs are due by the good-through date indicated on your wallet card. CEUs may be earned and reported in either educational and service categories or all in the educational category.  Service CEUs are optional and a maximum of 8 CEUs may be reported in this category.  All remaining CEUs must be reported in education.  Track your CEUs earned during the two-year recertification period on the CEU Submission Form and return this form to PLANET with your $75 recertification fee by your good-through date.

EDUCATION CATEGORIES
Certified individuals must report at least 16 of the required 24 CEUs from the following five educational categories. If reporting less than 24 CEUs in education, the remaining CEUs (maximum of 8) must be reported in qualifying service categories as described below. UPDATES to the requirements as of May 2010 are noted in red throughout.

Educ1
1 CEU per hour of instruction
Attending continuing education, conferences, and seminars presented by national, regional, or state green industry associations. Subject matter must be green industry or job related. This education category also encompasses PRE-APPROVED in-house training programs (see instructions for pre-approval process.)
Examples
GIC, TPIE, NEGrows, OH Turfgrass Conference, MidAm, Green & Growing, ProGreen Expo, CalScape etc.
Documentation required to be kept on file and submitted only when requested for audit purposes.
Copy of event brochure or flyer with sessions attended indicated and proof of registration. Documentation of in-house training pre-approval from PLANET.

Educ2
15 CEUs per credit hour
College/University course work and/or College/University-sponsored distance or online learning. Subject areas in business management or technical horticulture only.
Examples
Refer to college/university catalogs of courses offered in business management or technical horticulture.
Documentation required to be kept on file and submitted only when requested for audit purposes.
Proof of completion (certificate or transcript).

Educ3
1 CEU per hour of instruction
Education supporting green industry license completion or renewal. Requirements vary by state.
Examples
Contractor license, pesticide applicator license.
Documentation required to be kept on file and submitted only when requested for audit purposes.
Proof of completion or CEU statement from educational or training events.

Educ4
8 CEUs for earning an additional validated PLANET certification.
4 CEUs for earning a new specialty endorsement within a validated PLANET certification.
Examples
Landscape Industry Certified Technician – Exterior (formerly known as CLT-E) who earns Landscape Industry Certified Manager (formerly known as CLP) gets 8 CEUs; Landscape Industry Certified Manager who earns Landscape Industry Certified Technician – Exterior gets 8 CEUs; Landscape Industry Certified Technician in Irrigation who earns Turf Maintenance gets 4 CEUs.

Educ5
1 CEU per hour of course preparation, article writing (10 CEUs for a published book) or reading time Writing articles or books for publication, preparing presentations at schools, professional conferences, workshop or programs, or reading materials as part of self-study. Subject matter must be green industry or job related. Each article, presentation and self-study material may be counted only once during a two-year recertification period and cannot earn additional CEUs in future recertification periods unless proof is given that a considerable amount of further research and/or preparation was completed. EDUCATION CATEGORIES PRE-APPROVAL
If there is some education or training opportunity that does not fall into one of the Education categories, you can request pre-approval.  ALL IN-HOUSE TRAINING must be PRE-APPROVED. You may request a pre-approval review by submitting this information.  PLANET will respond via email and if approval is granted, will indicate the applicable number of CEUs.  A copy of that email response should accompany the recertification submission.

OPTIONAL SERVICE CATEGORIES
Certified individuals may report a maximum of 8 service CEUs earned from the following three Service categories. The reminder of the individual's CEUs (16-24) must be reported in qualifying Education categories. Service CEUs are OPTIONAL.

Serv1
.5 CEU per hour on site
Serving as a Landscape Industry Certified Technician – Exterior exam Judge or JTA participation on test day. Credit is extended for test day only.
Documentation required to be kept on file and submitted only when requested for audit purposes.
Documentation of participation from licensee with date/location of the exam.

Serv2
.5 CEU per hour
Serving on Board of Directors or as a Committee Chair for national, regional, or state associations. The affiliation of the association is not limited to the green industry. Serving as a committee member – the affiliation of the association must be green industry or job related.
Documentation required to be kept on file and submitted only when requested for audit purposes.
Official Leadership Roster from organization.

Serv3
.5 CEU per hour on site
Serving as the official ICC Evaluator to a Landscape Industry Certified Technician – Exterior exam for set up and test day. Credit is extended for both set up and test day.
Documentation required to be kept on file and submitted only when requested for audit purposes.
None, PLANET will verify the entry on the form.

Serv4
1 CEU per hour
Teaching or presenting at schools, professional conferences, workshop or programs. Subject matter must be green industry or job related. For CEUs awarded for preparation of presentation, see Educ5 category.
