Bidding and Estimating for Commercial Hardscape Projects

As the commercial construction industry moves toward completely digital plans and specifications, hardscape contractors have to find and learn how to use the tools that will allow them to access these markets. This session will look at the process and tools, such as estimating software, used to create an estimate. The process begins at the local plan room Web site, where plans and specifications for hardscape projects are posted. Once a project is identified, an “on-screen takeoff” can be performed and the resulting estimates and quantities can be determined.

Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement: A Stormwater Management Solution

Permeable pavement systems can store and infiltrate stormwater directly through the pavement, eliminating runoff and its associated impacts. This presentation reviews the basic design and construction of permeable interlocking concrete pavement, along with case studies. Performance issues related to joint maintenance, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, winter plowing, freeze-thaw, and concrete durability are reviewed. Regulatory incentives for low impact development (LID) paving solutions and potential Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®)® credits are also identified.

Tim Oberg, a landscape designer with more than 20 years of experience in sales, and design and installation, will showcase examples of how hardscape products can solve landscaping problems, create unique plans for homeowners, and showcase the craftsmanship of the contractor and create profitable bids.

Sustainable Hardscapes: Going Green and Making Green

This presentation reviews the LEED® version 3.0 basics, including: minimum project requirements, credit categories and levels, and potential LEED credits related to unit concrete products. Hardscaping issues related to surface coverage, erosion control, stormwater, water harvesting, and color (heat island) are presented, along with material resource topics related to concrete reuse, recycled content, and local manufacturing. The presentation will conclude with a review of market trends and a few of the government incentive programs related to hardscaping, and with information about the USGBC’s professional accreditation program, including the steps needed to earn your LEED Green Associate credential.

The ABCs of ACBs: Erosion Control Using Articulated Concrete Blocks

This presentation will focus on the history of the sediment and erosion control industry in North America and how to utilize articulated concrete blocks to construct revetments, boat launches, and shorelines. This information is a valuable addition to the toolbox of any hardscape installer.

Geosynthetics — Their Use and Application in Hardscapes

This session will cover  geosynthetic types, polymers, functions, and common terms used in hardscape construction applications. It will include a discussion of segmental retaining walls, interlocking concrete pavers, and articulating concrete blocks, and  will illustrate installation practices and pitfalls to avoid in the field. Emphasis will be placed on geogrids and geotextiles (selecting the right product for the right application). The session will also include an introduction to geomembranes and geocells.

Cleaning and Sealing Concrete Pavers: The Science Behind the Chemistry

This session will provide attendees with an overview of the major distinctions a paving contractor should be aware of when installing clay pavers. The discussion will address installation of extruded, dry-pressed, and hand molded clay pavers, including a discussion on square-edged and chamfered, and lugged and non-lugged units. The nuances involved with constructing flexible interlocking pavements with clay pavers over sand and bituminous setting beds will be emphasized. Rigid pavements with clay pavers installed over mortar setting beds will also be covered. This session is intended to highlight the major differences between installing clay pavers and concrete pavers from a contractor’s perspective.
