SAFETY RECOGNITION AWARDS PROGRAM DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 6, 2008!

PLANET’s Safety Recognition Awards Program, sponsored by CNA, is designed to reward green industry professionals who consistently demonstrate their commitment to safety, and reflects the dedication of these individuals and their companies to creating and maintaining safe work environments. All green industry service provider companies and branches are eligible to enter the Safety Recognition Awards Program. All entries must include the application, OSHA Form 300A Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, and a copy of the year-end vehicle insurance claims summary report.

Safety Recognition Awards are awarded to companies in the following categories:
No Vehicle Accidents, No Injuries or Illnesses, and No Days Away From Work. In addition, companies who participated in previous programs are eligible for the Most Improved category.

Program participants also may qualify for the Overall Safety Achievement Award. This award honors those companies with thorough, high-performing, safety programs that create and maintain safe work environments in the green industry. Companies are eligible for this award if they demonstrate outstanding safety performance in the workplace based on their combined fleet and employee incident rates. A checklist also is used to rate the company’s complete safety program.

OSHA Alliance Program

PLANET proudly announces its renewed alliance with OSHA, furthering our efforts to connect green industry businesses with valuable resources for the promotion of safety throughout the industry. Click here for more information on the April 6, 2006 announcement.

The OSHA and Professional Landcare Network Alliance focuses on all green industry companies and their employees with information and guidance that will help them reduce strains caused by manual material handling, amputations, motor vehicle crashes, and slip and trip injuries. The Alliance strives to provide training, education, outreach, and communication, and to promote the national dialogue on workplace safety and health.

The Alliance will continue to provide resources for often overlooked groups such as youth workers, non-English speaking workers, and other “hard to reach” employees with resources like their Spanish educational materials, the OSHA web page in Spanish, links to other industry alliances dealing with the issue of immigrant workers and the new Teen Workers summer jobs program entitled “Landscaping—Plant Your Feet on Safe Ground.” As a part of this last initiative, OSHA has developed a resource kit, or “tool box,” designed to help prevent injuries on the job specifically for the large number of teens working summer jobs in the green industry. Click here for more information on the Teen Workers program and resource kit.

As always, the PLANET/OSHA alliance strives to provide the most accessible safety resources for your employees, including these safety tip sheets:

Safety Tip Sheets:  #1
Slip and Trip Injuries in English and Spanish
#2 Lifting Injuries in English and Spanish
#3 Defensive driving in English and Spanish
#4 Reducing the risk of amputations in English and Spanish
