PLANET DAY OF SERVICE HELPS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ENJOY RENEWED GREEN SPACES
HERNDON, Va., April 26, 2012 — In celebration of Earth Day, the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) held its annual PLANET Day of Service, a grassroots effort that encourages PLANET members, its partners, and the rest of the green industry to create volunteer lawn care, landscape, and interiorscape projects in their own communities.
More than 2,600 volunteers from across 36 states and from Canada and Puerto Rico participated in approximately 150 projects, including landscaping elementary schools, city parks, court monuments, playgrounds, group homes, and senior citizen homes and educating local school children on the benefits of the green industry. It’s estimated that $675,000 in time and services was donated during this Day of Service.
PLANET Day of Service sponsors play a significant role in supporting and participating in the event. This year, there were a total of seven lead sponsors, six supporting sponsors, and 18 state, regional, and allied association partners. The lead sponsors included Agrium Advanced Technologies, American Profit Recovery, CNA, JOHN DEERE, Kichler Lighting, TruGreen, and Shindaiwa.
Many sponsors and partners conducted their own Day of Service projects; for example, Agrium Advanced Technologies worked on a middle school greenhouse and an LED lighting program; American Profit Recovery adopted a park, and built a walkway in the park; Shindaiwa worked on removing invasive species of plants, and TruGreen worked on turf projects at a women’s shelter and at a park to name a few.
“PLANET Day of Service isn’t just a one-day event,” said PLANET President Jerry Grossi, Landscape Industry Certified Technician. “It makes an impact on people’s lives and leaves a lasting legacy of renewed green spaces that thousands of people will enjoy for years to come.”
